Toshiba’s perpendicular hard drives made for next iPod?

Posted by: admin

May 19th, 2012 >> news

today announced the availability of its first hard drive based on perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), a new technology that increases the amount of data a drive can hold. The new MK4007GAL 1.8-inch PMR drive can store 40GB of data on a single platter, making it possible for thinner portable devices with larger capacity.

Toshiba, which makes the hard drives found in current iPods, hinted that future gadgets will take advantage of the new innovation, noting that an 80GB version is on the way. The addition of PMR technology will increase capacity options for product designs beyond those currently on the market today, especially as Toshiba introduces an 80GB 1.8-inch HDD with PMR later this year, the company said.

Didn t Target just have a special lava-glo Darth Vader action figure?  Must be some sort of crass, commercialized promotional tie-in I mean, why ELSE would someone be idiotic enough to make something like this? Am I Right?

I don t think The Force is with me today. I definitely think THIS is forced, however.

Numark to announce iDJ mixer for iPod

Posted by: admin

May 19th, 2012 >> news

Oh yes, on checking further, the iDJ has no DIN connector for MIDI. I didn’t really believe it couldn’t, so I had to check again on the spec sheet. That’s really poor. It’s *possible* that you could rig a MIDI passthrough over its USB, but since it’s simple slave port you’re not going to be easily able to use it to trigger events, such as controlling lights. So you’re still going to have to use a PC as the master controller. Again, poor. This is an overpriced child’s toy.

While it does disgust me that this thing has no pitchfaders, I do have to disagree with you on the midi thing. This is essentially just a mixer with two docks built in. Why would it have midi? It s an audio mixer for a DJ not the lighting guy. I m suprised it even has a USB passthrough to the docks.

Prototype Numark iPod DJ mixer shown

May 19th, 2012 >> news

I m with flatline on this one, could not even see the point only came out of dumbfounded curiosity.. What sort of solution is it..it can t work without caching the song in ram, so the iPod display has only a limited function and any Mp3 players should be capable . .and why do you need two iPods if all you are doing is browsing then moving to cache..

if vinyl is going to disappear the cd for most dj s is a workable alternative, the technology is there it s reliable and affordable and you won t crick your shoulder carrying around three hours of music even in uncompressed aiff format.. and they can survive a dousing in beer.

The hardware supply is the clubs problem ..unless you are looking to do a two day set ( god help us) who really needs the library capacity of the iPod or any mp3 player. The shuffle would be ok for many, few club audiences are as eclectic in their choice of music on a night out as they may be infront of their own hifi. .and imagine the worse- the possibility of seeing the DJ humping into a room a cut up crate full of iPods. If you have a lot of music .. flaunt it

if the venue only provides sound out to the PA you can get great results with a Laptop, Traktor DJ, external bus powered firwire harddrive with music on and a hercules usb mixer, all of which fits on the lid of an SJ1200 and all carried in a shoulder bag without getting a hernia. The whole set up can be picked up second hand for under £500 complete .More seasoned DJ hacks can prepare the set at home and just switch on hit play and ham it on the night.

iDJ mixer for iPod to ship in October

Posted by: admin

May 19th, 2012 >> news

The reason this sucks isn t because it has no pitch control.  And the DJs in here don t need to get over themselves.

Numark positions themselves as a producer of DJ equipment.  They even went so far as to put a recepticle for the turntable s spindle on the bottom of this unit.  You re wrong if you don t think they expect to see it used in a DJ booth.  What they don t realize is that trying to cash in on the iPod craze with the DJ crowd is stupid.  This will lessen their credibility in the DJ world because now they admit that they make expensive toys for idiots.  Any self-respecting tech geek would have gotten an iRiver instead of an iPod anyway (Lower price tag, higher capacity, more features, longer battery life, AND THEY RECORD AT 320K, but that s for another thread).

The point is, Numark just made it painfully clear that they don t know their target market at all.  This will fail.  DJs won t use it and others will soon forget about its novelty.

And for the record, I have played several gigs playing mp3s and wav files on big systems.  Guess how many people noticed?  Only the ones in the DJ booth.  Mac users do have more options than final scratch.  Do a Google search for Ms. Pinky.

May 19th, 2012 >> news

I went to AE yesterday and looked at the case for my 60 gb color Ipod. It wouldn t fit. Also It is made of very cheap leather and the belt clip looked even cheap. The inside looks like it was made for a 3rd gen ipod. Price was not 19.50 but 19.99. I belive it was not worth it. Plus colors are white leather or dark brown leather as well as light blue leather.

Oy, faux trophy mounts for the iPod watch out, Plasticsmith, Waterford can t be far behind.

Do we get etched stick-on brass plaques to go with em to? ( First Place, Mama s Monday Nite Bowling League ). Shame y all have ta clutter dem up wit all dem silly cords an all not like people actually USE their iPods, for what they were REALLY intended, after all.

Suitably Unimpressed. Just as I am with those cheap, made in some third-world sweatshop executive desk something-or-others gift sets one sees at Xmas time on those aisle kiosks down at the Office Depot. What a waste of precious plastic.  The Plastic Police should cite these guys.

Ok, I m going back to the sanitarium now

Nokia denies iTunes phone report

Posted by: admin

May 19th, 2012 >> news

This seems like a smart idea for Nokia not forcing buyers to use one store.  I personally *hate* cell phone companies not allowing customers to use whatever phone they want and disabling file transfers, etc.  It blows my mind that companies have that much audacity to tell paying customers that they can t do what they want to do simply because the company is too greedy to allow it.  I refuse to buy any phone that has OBEX or bluetooth disabled.  I will not pay $2.99 for a ringtone that EXPIRES in 60 days.  Ridiculous.

Sorry..had to vent.  I m better now.

I would buy this phone if Apple decided to add iTunes support.  I hate having my big iPod at the gym, but I can t bring myself to buy a smaller one just for that purpose.  And since I do bring my cellphone with me, this would be great.
